Customer Review: Great value HD camcorder with nice accessories

It seems hard to believe that today's camcorders have become so affordable while now offering true 1080 resolution. Yet that is the case for the new generation of models that have far fewer parts and utilize solid state memory. We purchased this model because it had the best reviews in its price range. And so far, it seems to have earned its high marks.
Here are some things that you may want to consider when buying one of these or a similar model. They are extremely lightweight and subject to jitter when handheld. There is a setting to reduce jitter, which is absolutely necessary imo if you are not using a tripod. Not having an eyepiece is also something former camcorder users might find challenging. You'll need to hold the camcorder at arm's length to really see the screen well (and frame your subject). This makes it even more difficult to steady the camcorder when handheld.
Barring this issue, the HMX-H200 performs extremely well. The SD cards keep coming down in price, so having this model makes more sense to me than getting the version with a built-in hard drive (which uses the battery power faster). There are some really cool functions to explore, such as the time-lapse feature. You'll want to experiment with the zoom function to get used to its operation. The 20X optical zoom is a great feature.
We bought the HMX-H200 bundled with a deluxe accessory kit. Unlike other bundles that provide some low-end gear, this one was well worth the money. The Vivatar tripod alone makes it a worthy buy. The only thing missing was a second battery, which you'll certainly need when doing extended shooting.
One last thing, the manual is extensive but provided only on a CD. Be prepared to use up a fair amount of ink and paper when printing it. The manual is very detailed, well organized and well written. We put ours in a three-ring binder, which makes it very convenient to study and use as a reference (especially when you're learning).
