Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Samsung SSG-P2100X/ZA (IMAX/Dragon) 3D Starter Kit, BlackCustomer Review: Samsung "Dragon" Starter Kit Works with Mitsubishi 3D TVs Summary: 3 Stars
I have a Mitsubishi #WD-73833. After buying the Mitsubishi 3D Starter Kit, I was interested in getting more pairs of 3D glasses. Mitsubishi couldn't confirm that the 3D glasses in the Samsung "How to Train Your Dragon" kit would work with Mitsubishi TVs, but I can. I got this kit at RC Willey for $225. The 3D glasses are the same as the glasses that come with Mitsubishi's kit but with the Samsung name and a slightly different model number stamped on them. They work exactly the same.
I haven't received my copy of "How to Train Your Dragon" yet (they mail it to you after you register your serial number with Samsung), so I can't comment on that disc. As far as the triple feauture goes... "IMAX Galapagos 3D" and "IMAX Into the Deep 3D" both demostrated the 3D effect well. "Mummies 3D: Secrets of the Pharaohs" had some 3D moments, but not as many as the other two titles. Each film is approximately 35 minutes.
If you're interested in getting a 3D version of "How to Train Your Dragon" for free, you'd better not wait too long to buy this kit because the promotion ends in early January (around the 6th, I think). This isn't printed on the box or in the literature that comes with the kit. Only after you visit Samsung's web page to register your serial number do you learn there's an expiration date. I think comsumers should know this at the time of purchase so they can decide if they still want to buy it if the promotion has already ended. Shame on Samsung for hiding this fact, and shame on them for not packing the movie inside the kit. That would solve the problem. Plus, it's not right to make consumers wait 10-12 weeks to receive the movie after they've spent hundreds of dollars to get it as part of a bundle. This why I gave this kit 4 stars and not 5.
Update: It took no more than 2 weeks for me to receive my 3D copy of "How to Train Your Dragon." The 3D effects are good, but the only bonus feature on the disc is a 3D trailer for "Megamind." No featurettes, no making-of documentaries, no audio commentaries, no subtitles, and no option to watch the movie in 2D. Do they expect people to buy the 2D Blu-ray of the movie if they're interested in bonus features? Ridiculous. I downgraded this to 3 stars.
Update: I received a pair of Optoma DLP Link glasses yesterday. Although they're a bit heavier and not as stylin' as Samsung's glasses, they're cheaper, don't require an emitter, and most importantly, they outperform them: Optoma's glasses restore the contrast level and deep blacks I was used to seeing on my Mitsubishi DLP TV in 2D mode; I can once again distinguish colors in dark scenes and make out detail that was lost with Samsung's glasses. I plan to sell my Samsung glasses now.
Description of Samsung SSG-P2100X/ZA (IMAX/Dragon) 3D Starter Kit, BlackThe Samsung SSGP2100X/ZA Dragons IMAX 3D Started Kit features Samsung's new battery powered 3D Active Glasses which are the gateway to Samsung 3D entertainment. Impressive both in how they function and in what they allow you to experience, the technology works as follows: When you put them on and look at the screen, the technology first blocks the left and then the right lens. It happens faster than the blink of an eye ? so your eye won't notice it. But when images are shown to each eye separately this ?staggered? effect achieves far more lifelike 3D images.
