Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Samsung USB 2.0 External Optical Drive SE-S084D/TSBS Super WriteMaster, Slim External DVD Writer (Gloss Black)Customer Review: Compatibility Issues Regarding Recognizing Media Discs Summary: 1 Stars
I thought it was time for me to write my own review of this product having had it for a month now. What I can tell you is that since I opened the box and connected it to my computer it caused me more aggravation and frustration, let alone wasted time trying to figure out why the damned thing did not work properly from the get-go. Since there is no Samsung Customer Support number you can call or live chat service via Internet your only option of support is via e-mail to a tech. support company (not Samsung) located in the Netherlands. So with that being my only choice I wrote them the following e-mail concerning my issues with this ODD (Optical Disc Drive), which I thought I'd share with you:
"Now on to my question/problem. I bought this ODD so I can create/burn/write home video recordings (.MOV and .AVI file formats) on to DVDs. I am currently using AVS Video Editing Software (not the accompanying Nero software yet). When I come to burn my content using the AVS Video Burner Service it detects the Samsung DVD Writer Drive (G:) but after a minute or so after I hit the "Burn" button the following error pops up: "Operation can not be performed with current disc type". (See attached .jpg file to see a visual of these pop up windows). After getting this message I figured it must be the type of DVD+-R discs I was using that it didn't like. I was using Philips DVD-R 4.7GB blank discs. So I went out and figured I'd try buying DVD+R discs 4.7GB discs this time and buy a different brand, so I bought the Memorex brand this time. When I went to hit the 'Burn' button again with this different brand and disc type, sure enough I got the same pop-up error where it doesn't support and/or cannot detect current disc type.
So, I'd like to know what gives? Why am I getting this error message when trying to burn my AVS video editing projects to a DVD? I know it cannot be the blank DVD-+ discs I bought because I tried two popular media brands and two different disc types (+ and -) and nadda, nothing. I could not find this problem/question anywhere in the FAQ and Troubleshooting sections so can someone in your department please tell me why I'm getting this error when trying to burn DVDs? and how to fix it? And yes, I've already downloaded the ODD Firmware LiveUpdate so I must be running the most current firmware for this product - TS01. It's been very time-consuming and frustrating trying to figure it out up until this point.
Last thing I wanted to mention is that this is my second Samsung ODD Writer. I returned the first one which gave me the same problem thinking it was defective...unfortunately this wasn't the case since the replacement one is giving me the same issues. If you cannot resolve this problem for me I'm afraid I'll have to return this second unit too. I'd hate to have to do that. Please H-E-L-P!
Thanks.
~Robert
P.S. You should know that I have no problem with this drive reading/playing CDs and DVDs -- only burning/writing.
P.P.S. I thought I'd also mention that I know for a fact it's not the discs I've tried because I was able to successfully burn video content to DVD with both brands/formats on an internal DVD Writer Drive on my other Dell computer."
It took them two days to respond to my e-mail (they're also 7 hours ahead of us which makes for an even longer response rate) and what they had to say wasn't much and didn't end up resolving this issue I was having. So as a result, I ended up returning the second (replacement one) ODD for a full refund. The only positive thing I can say is that Amazon was more than cool about the whole thing from sending me out a replacement to giving me a full refund when I sent it back. They paid for the shipping and the process couldn't have been faster or easier. I never did come to understand why I had these issues with this product not once but twice, but now that I got my money back I plan to buy the Transcend USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (Black), which runs for about the same price and hopefully this brand doesn't give me the same problems. It seems as though I'm the only one on here of all the reviewers of this product that experienced issues like this. Hope this review is helpful to those considering buying this Samsung ODD. My low score rating for this product is in part the result of the compatibility issue I experienced not once but twice and the poor customer support.
BTW, thought I'd also mention I'm running Windows XP on my PC (not Apple/Mac)
